About This Flight
The Kathmandu to Makalu High Camp Helicopter Tour is an exclusive aerial adventure into the remote Makalu-Barun region of eastern Nepal. Departing from tribhuvan International Airport, the tour takes you above Kathmandu’s surrounding hills, terraced farmland, deep river valleys and isolated mountain settlements before reaching the spectacular high-altitude landscapes surrounding Mount Makalu. The main highlight is an aerial exploration of the Makalu High Camp area, set within a dramatic landscape of ice, rock and immense Himalayan peaks. The experience provides a scenic flyover with views of the surrounding glaciers, climbing route and upper-mountain terrain.
The journey includes a refueling and operational stop at Lukla and then to Tengbuche, before continuing toward Makalu High Camp. Due to the extreme altitude and helicopter payload limitations, all passengers cannot always be carried in a single flight beyond Tengbuche. When necessary, the journey is completed using short shuttle rotations, ensuring safe weight and balance throughout the high-altitude sector.
Mountain Helicopters Nepal operates this tour as a private charter for acclimatized trekkers, mountaineering expedition members, photographers, researchers, and adventure travelers seeking access to one of Nepal's most remote Himalayan regions. With spectacular aerial views of the eastern Himalayas, close-up perspectives of the Makalu massif, and the opportunity to reach the Makalu High Camp area, this helicopter journey offers an exclusive and unforgettable experience in one of the country's wildest mountain landscapes.

Tour Feels Like
Passengers enjoy a comfortable and scenic helicopter operated by experienced professional pilots with extensive expertise in high-altitude mountain flying. The journey provides a fast and convenient alternative to the long overland approach, offering an unforgettable aerial experience over some of Nepal’s most spectacular Himalayan landscapes.
Shortly after takeoff, Kathmandu gives way to rolling hills, terraced farmland, winding river valleys, and the towering peaks of the eastern Himalayas. As the helicopter continues toward the Makalu region, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged, with deep valleys, dramatic ridgelines, vast glaciers, and snow-covered summits unfolding below. On clear days, passengers enjoy outstanding views of Mount Makalu and the surrounding Himalayan giants, creating a truly memorable flight experience. Weather and mountain conditions can change rapidly in this remote region, so the pilot may adjust the flight path or altitude as required to maintain the highest standards of safety.
After that, the helicopter lands in the Makalu High Camp area, where passengers may disembark after receiving instructions from the flight crew. The landing site is a remote high-altitude environment, and conditions can be cold, windy, and uneven, with rocky, snowy, icy, or dusty terrain depending on the season.
Who should choose
Know Your Destination
Mountain weather and helicopter plans can change. The team reconfirms the proposed reporting time, passenger list, exact body weights, baggage, permits, weather outlook, landing or flyover plan, and return arrangement.
Passengers report to the exact Kathmandu airport or helipad location shown in the booking confirmation. Identification, required documents and baggage are presented for verification..The team checks legal names, body weights, baggage weight, restricted items and the documents required for the tour. A high-altitude destination can reduce useful load, so the final passenger number cannot be determined from cabin seat count alone.
The crew explains approach direction, restraint use, headset communication, loose-item control, emergency procedures, and disembarkation. Passengers must disclose any concern before boarding rather than waiting until the helicopter is airborne.
The helicopter follows the route approved for the day as the landscape changes from the hills around Kathmandu toward the high terrain of the Makalu region . For any scheduled landing, passengers are to remain seated until the crew authorizes disembarkation and must remain within the designated approved area.
After departing Makalu High Camp, the helicopter retraces its route through Nepal's spectacular eastern Himalayas, offering one final opportunity to admire snow-capped peaks, glaciers, deep valleys, and remote mountain landscapes from above. Depending on operational requirements, a brief refuelling stop at Lukla may be made before continuing to Kathmandu. As the flight descends, the rugged alpine scenery gradually transforms into the lush green hills surrounding the Kathmandu Valley, where your journey concludes with a landing at the designated airport or helipad.
Questions
Still have questions? Our team is available 7 days a week.
ASK US DIRECTLY→It is a scenic high-altitude helicopter journey from Kathmandu toward the Makalu High Camp region, with the return, landing or flyover arrangement defined in the confirmed itinerary. Travelers experience changing Himalayan terrain from the air while weather, visibility, aircraft performance and passenger suitability determine the final operation.
“High Camp” is not one standardized public tourist destination. Makalu expeditions may establish several camps above base camp, so the quotation must identify the exact reference point and whether the tour flies over it, lands at another approved site or follows a different plan. Feasibility depends on operations and pilot approval.
“Makalu High Camp” can refer to different expedition camps or operational expectations. The final confirmation must state whether there is a landing at all and, if so, provide the exact approved site, elevation and fallback. Never assume that the keyword guarantees a landing inside an active expedition camp.
Rapid ascent to very high altitude can create serious altitude-illness risk. Passengers should disclose recent sleeping altitudes and health concerns. Mountain Helicopter Nepal should not market a High Camp landing as an ordinary day trip for unacclimatized travelers without appropriate operational and medical safeguards.
If a landing is part of the confirmed itinerary, the pilot may hold, turn back, divert, reduce the load or use an approved alternative. The written terms should explain whether the tour becomes a flyover, uses another site, returns to Kathmandu, is rescheduled or receives any partial refund.
Depending on the route and weather, the tour may reveal the hills around Kathmandu, remote valleys, alpine terrain, snowfields, glaciers and the Makalu massif. No named peak, valley or photographic angle is guaranteed because cloud, light, seating and operational routing change from one departure to another.
