About This Flight
The Lukla to Makalu High Camp Helicopter Tour gives trekkers and travelers already in the Khumbu a fast way to reach one of Nepal's most remote mountain regions without flying back to Kathmandu first. Departing from Tenzing-Hillary Airport, the helicopter climbs east out of the Khumbu, crossing a string of high ridges and side valleys that separate the Everest region from the Barun watershed, before descending into the dramatic glacial terrain around Mount Makalu. The tour's centerpiece is an aerial pass through the Makalu High Camp area, framed by the south face of the mountain and the icefields feeding the Barun Glacier.
Because the route crosses several high passes at altitude, the flight is flown as a single non-stop sector between Lukla and Makalu High Camp under normal conditions. Payload is calculated for the full sector in advance, and the crew may adjust passenger or baggage load, or split a group across rotations, through charter if density altitude or weather on the day reduces available lift.
Mountain Helicopters Nepal operates this tour as a private charter for acclimatized trekkers, expedition members, photographers and researchers who want to see the Makalu-Barun region up close. For anyone finishing an Everest Base Camp trek or already staged in Lukla, it's a way to add a second Himalayan giant to the trip without the two-day drive or extra Kathmandu rotation that a Makalu tour normally requires.

Tour Feels Like
The flight is short but the terrain changes fast. Within a few minutes of leaving Lukla, the forested hillsides of the Khumbu give way to bare ridgelines, and the cabin gets noticeably colder as the helicopter gains altitude. Passengers flying this route for the first time are often surprised by how quickly the familiar Everest-region landscape disappears behind the Helicopter.
Once past the passes separating the two watersheds, the terrain opens into the Barun Valley, steep, glaciated and largely uninhabited. The helicopter tracks the valley toward Makalu, with the mountain's south face and the surface of the Barun Glacier visible below on a clear run. As with any high-altitude sector in this region, the pilot may adjust altitude or hold short of the base camp area if conditions change.
If the itinerary includes a landing, the helicopter sets down in the Makalu Base Camp area, and passengers disembark once the crew gives the signal. The ground here is remote and high cold, often windy, and uneven underfoot, with loose rock, snow or ice depending on the season.
Who should choose
Know Your Destination
The team reconfirms your reporting time at Lukla, passenger list, exact body weights, baggage, weather outlook, and the landing or flyover plan for the day. Since most passengers on this tour are already in the Khumbu, coordination is usually done by phone or WhatsApp rather than in person.
The airport tax is payable at the airport before departure. National park and local permit fees are paid either after arriving in the Everest region or before takeoff, depending on the flight's operating arrangements and the instructions provided by the crew.

Health, Safety & Altitude Guidelines
Makalu Base Camp sits close to 4,900 metres. At this altitude, atmospheric pressure is roughly half of sea-level pressure, so each breath delivers substantially less oxygen. A brief helicopter landing is generally manageable for healthy, properly acclimatized travelers, but the altitude can still bring on headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness or breathlessness, even in visitors who feel fine at Lukla's lower elevation.

Questions
Still have questions? Our team is available 7 days a week.
ASK US DIRECTLY→It's a scenic high-altitude helicopter flight from Lukla to the Makalu Base Camp area, with the landing or flyover arrangement set in the confirmed itinerary. It's built for travelers already in the Khumbu who want to see Makalu without routing back through Kathmandu.
Lukla is already the starting or ending point for most Everest-region trekking, so flying to Makalu from there skips a Kathmandu departure and an extra day of positioning. It's the more direct option if you're already in the Khumbu.
Yes. This tour departs from Lukla, so you'll need to have already flown or trekked in before your scheduled departure. If you need help arranging the Kathmandu–Lukla leg as well, let us know when booking.
Requirements vary by nationality and activity. Expect a Makalu Barun National Park permit and Lukla airport tax at minimum; expedition members or filming crews may need additional approval. Confirm current requirements before payment.
Capacity depends on combined passenger and baggage weight, fuel load, temperature, wind and density altitude at both Lukla and Makalu Base Camp
If a landing is part of the confirmed plan, the pilot may hold, reduce the load, use an alternative site, or convert the tour to a flyover. Terms should specify whether a missed landing affects pricing or refund eligibility.
